BAIXA - CHIADO
It is the tourist zone of Lisbon par excellence; the quantity of large hotels and the streets littered with small cafes provide a pleasant atmosphere, and the night life is only a few steps away. Baixa has the majority of Lisbon's sights, making it the perfect place to stay.
The best attraction of the Baixa is undoubtedly the incredible view from the top of the triumphal arch of Augusta Street.
This arc connects Augusta Street to the Trade Square and, from its viewpoint, the panoramic views of the square, the Tagus Estuary, Augusta Street and the Castle are breathtaking!
Chiado is located a short distance to the west of Baixa.
These two quarters complement each other; one being the realm of fashion and style during the day, the other being trendy and casual at night.
Chiado is Lisbon's popular district for shopping and theaters, with a wealth of historical monuments, traditional shops and fascinating cafes and restaurants.
A LITTLE HISTORY…
Baixa is an elegant neighborhood, built after the earthquake of 1755. It owes its name (Pombalina) to Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, first marquess of Pombal, Prime Minister of Joseph I of Portugal from 1750 to 1777 and eminent figure Portuguese Enlightenment, which led the reconstruction of Lisbon after the earthquake of 1755.
La Baixa is one of the earliest examples of anti-seismic construction whose main characteristics are, for example, the "pombaline cage", a symmetrical latticework made of oak wood whose purpose is to distribute seismic forces. The Lisbon furniture of the 1920s will still be built according to this principle.
Chiado is once the neighborhood where artists and other young hopefuls from rich Lisbon met.
Praça Luís de Camoes, one of the emblematic sites of the Eye-Lets Revolution, marks the limits of the Chiado and Bairro Alto districts.
SHOPPING…
It is in Rua Augusta, the main artery of the Baixa, that you will find all the great century-old Portuguese family businesses, as well as various international brands.
La Conserveira de Lisboa - A cannery opened in 1930, fascinating for its stacks of multicolored sardines.
Casa Macario - One of the oldest shops in Lisbon!
You will find bottles of Porto and wines, but also sardines in con-serve, homemade jams. Etc ...
Icon - This charming little shop has just opened, on the initiative of two Portuguese designers. Pretty notebooks, drawings, paintings, ceramics and jewels, the choice is sharp and of very good quality.
A vida Portuguesa - You will find exclusively Portuguese objects; it goes from soap to beauty creams, children's games, sardines in oil, wool blankets. Delightfully obsolete!
DINNER OR TAKE A GLASS ...
Ginjinha Bar - Stop for a drink of Ginja, a homemade cherry liqueur. The "old" know this "medicinal remedy" which was used to heal small ailments and chills in their childhood ...
Bella Chiao - This little trattoria is the place to be for fans of Italian food. In the kitchen, Marcello di Salvatore prepares himself every plate ... everything is homemade! Tiramisu for dessert is a must
Caxemira - Located Praça da Figueira this Indian restaurant will delight the followers of spicy dishes. We recommend their delicious samosas starter followed by their shrimp curry ... You will not be disappointed!
Gambrinus - This upscale brewery, typically old-fashioned, will serve you fish cooked to perfection as well as an exceptional Cozido (local pot au feu)!
Tavares - Opened in 1784, it is the oldest restaurant in Portugal. The decoration reminds you of Versailles, with its golden walls, mirrors, chandeliers and velvet chairs. The kitchen presents classic dishes reinvented and signed by chef Henrique Mouro.

Baixa is easily accessible as it is located in the center of Lisbon.
We often walk there when we are already in the center.

The apartment disposes at almost anything you could wish for although it could do with some coffee for the Nespresso machine. The stairs were rather challenging bit definitely worth the effort. Our honeymoon was that much wonderful in this charming city! Apartment is in a great location. Central and close to everything. Our recommendations: -Sintra-definitely visit the Pena palace and Quinta da Regaleira and walk instead of taking the bus. -Cascais- good to visit in the warm weather. Must ride the bike and take in the scenery! And most importantly don’t forget to walk and absorb all the beauty around you. Enjoy!” |

“Lisbon,
You’ve been great to us. This apartment was a great starting point to each one of our limited days here. The stairs, although a burden, added character to our experience. We will see if we feel the same when we must carry our bags down on the way out!! We had a long trip that ended here in Lisbon with our last stop. We were in Madrid, Seville, Marracech and Lagos before coming here but we found this to be a wonderful final stop before our journey home. We’ll leave you with a few suggestions. Go to Belém, try the pastries at Pastéis de Belém. And sure, checkout Padrão dos Descobrimentos(the monument) while you’re there. Belém tower is a must over there as well. If you like food markets check out time out market(it’s close by). There are some pretty good eats here. Watch some of the food coming out and then pick what you like. Restaurante Bar Alto is great for a drink and some eats sitting out on the street and watching the nightlife swirl around you. 9, 10pm is a good time. Bairro do Avillez was also really nice too. Both are withtin walking distance. Basically up the hill at night is where you want to go. MAke sure you get to Castelo de Sao Jorge. Best view in Lisbon. Have fun travelers! PS: THe parking garage rooftop bar for sunset is sensational. Look it up. Do it! “We stayed here for 4 nights. It’s the best apartment rental ever. Tips: -Go to Pingo doce market for fresh 1L orange juice -beach, take the train at Casi do Sodré and go to Cascais -eat around Chiado -go to the car park bar for apero -visit A Vida Portuguesa for things -go see the Sao Jorge Castle early(09h30 ish) -order roast chicken at Frangasqueira nacional -eat a bifanas sandwich at Café Beira Cave -In summer drink Rosé wine We had a blast here in Lisboa and will comeback... Squeezed lodas into a three day stay (including lots of trips up and down the precarious stairs, but must be a lot fitter now!) There is so much to do herewe can’t wait to return, below are just some of our highlights(nearby):
-Trip O nosso Tejo, 45 min express on traditional portuguese sailing boat but woudl recommend longer as so enjoyable, really friendly crew who gave us some wine and even got to hoist the mai sail and steer(a ittle of course) -Sunset drink at therooftop bar terraceup the car park in Bairro Alto-panoramic vista, great vibes, music -Lx factory, bit of a walk but well worth it, crammed with sweet art, artisan shops, artist’s studies and places to eat. You can take a bus, tramtrain too but we got to stop off at Le chat for lunchin Santos, amazing views over park -Outstanding eating at oficina(good value) less than 10min up road(Calçada do Duque) and just 5 min away from Café no Chiado(live Fado) bairro do Avillez 100 maneiras-pricey but delicious food. -Don’t miss MNAC accross road Enjoy PS: Thanks to José for his tips and really great guestphone” |
