The Neighborhood
Since the beginning, the area has always been a diverse, multicultural place. In 1147, D. Afonso Henriques, who later became the first king of Portugal, conquered Lisbon and named the district Mouraria, after the Moors from North Africa. Our street, Rua das Olarias (meaning potteries), is on the upper side of Mouraria. Historically, because of its strategic location, the road was the only pathway for Christian women to travel from the Castelo/ Alfama area to the north side of town. In 1755, Mouraria, because of its clay soil, survived the devastating earthquake that destroyed most of Lisbon. The residents commemorated the event by marking “OS” (in Latin translated to “Of the Saints”), on the top of the door frame, which can still be seen on R. das Olarias #3 and a few buildings around that corner. Mouraria was also where fado music was born, producing a few of the best fadistas. A fascinating history, indeed.
What is Around
The building is about 5-10 minutes walk to either metro station Martim Moniz or Intendente on the green line. It is also about 10 minutes walk to the start of Tram #12 or #28 to the Castle, or #15 to Belem. Live music and special events take place at Martim Moniz or Largo do Intendente, one of the hippest areas in town. In terms of food, there is no other district offering a richer tapestry of ethnic eateries, from the world-renowned seafood place Cervejaria Ramiro (a 5 minute walk) to Portuguese, Bangladeshi, Vietnamese, Nepalese and Chinese eateries, as well as hamburger joints, cafes and bars.
Living Like Locals
As this will be a true representation of living like locals, among residents who have lived here a long time, there can be no parties, events or any type of social functions in the apartment. Please respect the neighbors. To best manage the tight turn into the parking area, only small or medium car is advised. No large cars or SUVs.
MOURARIA
If, in the past, it was a much more hectic and rundown neighborhood, it is becoming a very hip and popular place.
It is the most multicultural district of the city; a total of 56 nationalities coexist there, most of them from Bangladesh, China, India, Pakistan and Mozambique.
However, the Mouraria has not lost its authenticity, between its decrepit walls and laundry drying windows.
Located between Martim Moniz and the São Jorge Castle, to feel the atmosphere, you have to get lost in the alleys. They are sometimes no more than one meter wide. One has the impression to walk directly in the houses of Lisbon.
THE HISTORY
The Mouraria is one of the most traditional neighborhoods of Lisbon. The Moors lived there after the conquest of Lisbon by D. Afonso Henriques in 1147 until their expulsion in the 15th century.
It is in the heart of its winding streets that fado was born, a melancholy music that comes from the basfonds of the Portuguese capital.
Severa, the first fado singer known in Portugal in the nineteenth century, lived here. It is said that Severa fell in love with a count and this is where fado appears in the aristocratic halls. In the twentieth century, Fernando Maurício, considered as the "king of the fado of Mouraria", lived there too. Rua do Capelão is part of the iconography of fado. It is also in Mouraria that Mariza, the most international fado singer, grew up.

Excellent equipped, very nice view, walking distance to Miradouro da Nossa Senhora do Monte, to Graca and to Intendente and Baixa. I really enjoyed staying here for more than just a week. You even have a private parking lot behind the house, which in Mouraria is a must have since there is simply no place to leave your car on the narrow streets...

Hello Lisbon discoverers,
We are Sarah and Tomé and have been in our little honeymoon here in Lisbon. We can highly recommend to take the time to discover places outside of Lisbon for example Cascais, Estoril and Sintra. If you do not have a car you can easily do it by train. One of our favorite spots: TAmariz beach(praia do Tamariz) in Estoril, get amazing views and great food. It is worth visiting. For Lisbon we also recommend to travel to the other side of the river to the Christo statue. Enjoy your time in Lisbon. Disfrutem o vosso tempo em Lisboa! |

We used the yellow bus line and id the red, yellow boat and blue lines. The best part was just wandering the streets and taking in all the sights. We went to Sintra but unfortunately the weather was quite rainy and we missed the views. Loved the monument “Dicovery of the Americas”, that whole are is not to be missed. Thanks to José for such awonderful introduction, everything was spot on”. Hard to leave this great apartment. We would live here! |
